Larry Ashkie's art rides the fence between free-form expressionism and more traditionally recognizable representational styles. And he likes it that way. Ashkie's paintings include pow-wow scenes in sunrise oranges and reds, and more mysterious and flowing abstract subjects in midnight blues and blacks. "I try not to limit myself to 'Native Arts' Ashkie says. The award winning artist originally from Pinon, Arizona, has a college degree in fine arts from a small college in Phoenix, but he said he's mostly self-taught. He's most comfortable working with acrylic paint. Ashkie said oil paint takes to long to dry and watercolors are challenging to get just right. "Once you make that stroke, that's it," Ashkie says.
