Cora Quiroz, aka Oni Girl is a painter, muralist, and fire dancer from Detroit, Michigan. She is currently a volunteer and resident artist at the Arizona Latino Arts and Cultural Center in Downtown Phoenix, as well as a member of Cahokia, an Indigenous led SocialTech and Art Space also in Downtown Phoenix. Cora has an Associate’s Degree in Graphic Design, and is currently studying a Bachelor’s of Fine Art Painting and Drawing at Arizona State University. There she was nominated to have an Honor’s studio. Since she has moved to Phoenix, she has worked with Roosevelt Row, Xico Inc, IndigenousCC, and Indigenous Design Collab to work on a mural on Roosevelt Row with Piersten Doctor, and will be painting another mural in the Fall of 2021 for the Uncontained Mural Project. Cora has also worked with the Sagrado Galleria and exhibited in the Mujeres Del Desierto Show in 2021, as well as exhibited with the Latino Arts and Cultural Center.
In Michigan, Cora has worked as an apprentice and as a teacher at the Young Artist at Work program through the Toledo Arts Commission. Through there, she met Ken Dushane, aka Phybr whom she worked for as a muralist assistant for three years on 20+ murals all over the midwest, as well as participating in SpraySeeMo for two years which is a mural festival in Kansas City. Ken Dushane mentored her to learn the process of executing murals with spray paint. She has done a few murals of her own on private properties, public spaces in Kansas City, as well as in stores and on Roosevelt Row in Phoenix. Cora started selling her artwork at a young age through art festivals and anime/comic conventions and has been working as a vendor at numerous shows all over the midwest and Phoenix for close to 8 years. Through the years, Cora has worked with mainly watercolor and oil, but also enjoys working with spray paint, ink, acrylic, and charcoal. Recently, she has expanded her work to 3D artwork through welding, clay, foam, and paper. Cora often uses common substrates such as canvas or paper, but also uses natural and naturally found objects to paint on such as wood cookies, driftwood, sea glass, bones, skulls, hardened mushrooms, and shells. Cora is deeply inspired by Frida Kahlo, as she relates to Frida’s disabilities, life, and her art. She is also inspired by the modern oil painter and muralist Drew Merit, with his hyper-realistic massive murals done with spray paint, she hopes to also master oil and spray paint as he has. Cora’s paintings generally focus on exploring her identity as a multiracial woman, with themes of feminism, spirituality, and decolonization. With her education and experience, she hopes she can work as an Art Professor and help other artists gain technical ability with their artwork, learn the process of ideas and creativity, as we as the design process so they can express themselves and enrich their lives through art. |
